Every student starts off at a different level. That's just the way it is. We suggest that prior to starting the school year, you download the master list and test your child's knowledge against it. Have them spell every word on the list. If they breeze through it, skip to the next year.
If your child misses a few of the words, we suggest to move up a year and tag on the missed words throughout the year. Some parents may combine two years together if a student can spell most words within two years worth of words. That's okay, just make sure you organize yourself :)
If your child struggle within the first few words, stop and use that book. It's very important that you do not make the child feel dumb or stressed over missed spelling words. Just say the point was to see what level they are ready for and that not knowing a word just means that they haven't been covered yet.
Most students starting out at age five or six will be perfectly fine just starting with year one, but if you are new to the program, the steps above prove to be helpful.
