Writing involves two aspects: penmanship and composition. During the first few years, the focus is on improving penmanship and grasping the basic concepts of putting ideas together in writing.
It is gradual and should not be rushed. It starts with writing letters. Then it's words. And then sentences. To paragraphs. To essays, speeches, stories, etc. This takes years. During Years One and Two be free with it. Get a notebook and let your child write whatever she wants. Make it a habit. Make it fun. Use the small writing prompts in the Reading textbooks. Since writing is interdisciplinary, there isn't a separate "program" for writing in our curriculum because there are ample writing opportunities in the language arts, history, and science subjects. Here you will find resources for penmanship, cursive, supplemental writing worksheets, and any resources we think you may want to consider using.
In Year Four, we ramp up the writing requirement and use Houghton Mifflin's English series to teach writing. These are not easy to find as downloadable PDFs, so the texts are provided here. Remember, when you buy these books, they cover everything in grammar, writing, and reading comprehension...and that makes it a good deal. Anything else listed is supplemental to the text, but could be used to teach writing if you can't afford the book.
